Is Hanalei open? What about the end of the road?
Yes, Hanalei is open and the merchants here appreciate your business!
Kauai experienced record amounts of rainfall in April 2018. As a result of those floods the island was saturated, subsequent rains resulted in landslides that need attention now. As of May one lane is open on the hill into Hanalei, traffic is directed one way by a traffic light or personnel depending upon the time. While the backup may appear long we've found the usual delay to be 10-15 minutes. The Department of Transportation has communicated possible longer delays if the work involves scaling rocks, during that activity no traffic will be allowed to pass. Hanalei is worth the wait, despite any delays, we advise just allowing a little more travel time when you come.
With the end of the road now open as of June 17th there are new and hopefully better ways to experience the beauty of the north shore. With limited entry to Ha'ena State Park it's wise to plan ahead for your trip. For more information on visiting the park please check out https://www.gohaena.com.
The Kaua‘i North Shore Shuttle service will launch June 21 and run between Princeville and the Hā‘ena State Park stopping at various points along the way. They will provide service to visitors and residents alike with stops at merchant centers and County lifeguarded beaches.
